Internet runs extremely slow now

question

The Internet runs extremely slow now, I can't log into MSN Messenger (only works 1 out of 10 attempts).
Websites take minutes to load and you get 'Internet Explorer Cannot Display This Page'

answer

In an administrator privileged command prompt, enter
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

get to command prompt by clicking Start then in the search box (was the Run box), type cmd

desktop icons in vista

question
is there anyway to make them smaller, they look stupid that big, ive had a look but cant see for trying. still getting a handle on this OS.

answer

Click on one of the icons, hold ctrl and use the mouse scroll wheel to make them whatever size you want.

Right click on the desktop - View - Classic icons. They should now be the same size as the standard icons in XP.

Deleting "windows.old"

question
Deleting "windows.old" after installing Vista?
Is it safe to delete the windows.old folder after installing Vista? I did a clean install, so I'm not sure why its still on, its taking up 10gb

answer

its there so you don't have to transfer all your data when you install Vista. If you don't need anything in it then you can delete it.

"Windows has blocked some startup programs"

"Windows has blocked some startup programs"

I blocked them because I didn't was icons cluttering up my taskbar when I wasn't using them.
And now you have an icon in the taskbar in their place telling you what you already know.

in Windows Vista, you get a popup message every so often and an icon by the clock.
How do I turn it off ?

if i right click the icon and get "Show or remove blocked startup programs", "Run blocked programs", "View help" or "Exit".

answer

You need to right click on the icon that appears telling you programs have been blocked and run it. Then select the checkbox in the window that says "Don't display this message again".
